Like Dalhousie University, the Lord Nelson Hotel & Suites has been an integral part of Halifax for many decades.
So it’s not surprising there have been many connections between the historic landmark hotel and the university over the years, including Lord Nelson owners and employees who were graduates, guests who stayed there while visiting loved ones attending the school and a long list of ongoing sponsorships.
Most recently the hotel was a proud sponsor of Dal’s 200th anniversary celebrations. It’s also a regular supporter of the annual DPMG Conference and hosts of the annual client appreciation holiday luncheon for Dal administrative staff.
Ralph Medjuck, a recent owner of the Lord Nelson, is also a longstanding Dal supporter. His donation of $2.5 million to renovate a 97-year-old Sexton campus building used by the Faculty of Architecture and Planning inspired its renaming to the Ralph M. Medjuck Building.
“Dalhousie has been the foundation and the source for my energy and the source for my many accomplishments. It is a pleasure and an honour to be seen as a partner with the university,” Medjuck, (LL.B ’54) said at the dedication.
The Oland family, iconic Nova Scotia brewers and also former owners of the hotel, enriched the Dal archives by entrusting it with their historic family records and artifacts dating back to 1870. Archivists said some of the more interesting materials donated over several years included brewing recipe books for Oland and Son and A. Keith and Son, photographs, advertising proofs, beer labels, and materials relating to the Bluenose II, commissioned by Oland and Son.
An eight-month project in 2009 to catalogue all of the materials resulted in an exhibit at the Killam Memorial Library.
The 90-year-old Lord Nelson Hotel is a historic landmark with an unmatched location overlooking the Halifax Public Gardens and proximity to other downtown amenities, including Dal.
